Quantum behaviors of surface plasmon resonances in nanostructures have attracted tremendous attention due to the fundamental research interests and potential applications in sensing, spectroscopy, energy harvesting, and quantum computing at reduced dimensions. In contrast to the rapid experimental progress, microscopic understanding on the quantum nature of surface plasmons and their local coupling with surface excitations is still rather limited. In this talk, I will present a quantum-mechanical view of surface plasmons and their coupling to surface excitations. We will discuss in particular the quantum effects such as electron tunneling, resonance plasmon-molecule coupling, nonlinear response and charge transfer of nanoparticles and nanogaps. |
