Abstract:

The Physics Department at Bar-Ilan University is home to a broad spectrum of research, ranging from quantum materials and optics to biophysics, astrophysics, and theoretical modeling.

In the first part of this talk, I will present an overview of the diverse research areas pursued by our faculty, highlighting the scientific challenges we tackle and the opportunities available for student involvement.

In the second part, I will present a specific example of interdisciplinary research carried out in our department, a collaboration between myself, an experimentalist in condensed matter physics, and Prof. Shlomo Havlin, a specialist in network theory. Together, we study interdependent superconducting networks and demonstrate how such physical systems can offer insight into cascading failures in complex infrastructures like electric grids, internet systems, and urban traffic networks. This example illustrates how fundamental physics research can intersect with global real-world challenges.

Biography:

Prof. Aviad Frydman is a physicist at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, where he serves as a professor and head of the Department of Physics. His research focuses on the electronic properties of low-dimensional and disordered systems, particularly disordered superconductors. He earned his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed postdoctoral work at UC San-Diego. Frydman has held visiting professor positions at Yale University, the Institute Néel in Grenoble, and the University of Cambridge, UK. He is known for pioneering experiments on the interplay between disorder, dimensionality, and superconductivity. He has published papers in leading journals such as Nature Physics, Nature Communications and PRL and co-authored the book "The Electron Glass".
